PhD Program in Accounting or Taxation

The Area offers two distinct PhD programs in Accounting and Taxation. PhD education in these two fields has a long history at the University of Mannheim and is an integral part of the Area’s research environment. The program includes formal PhD courses during the first two years. The courses are offered through the University’s Center for Doctoral Studies in Business (CDSB) and taught by renowned international faculty. The rigorous methodological training during the early phase is one of the program’s key strengths. After having completed the formal training, students work closely with experienced faculty members on independent research projects. The Area has a long tradition of very successful collaboration between PhD students and faculty with recent work having been published in, e.g., Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review, Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, International Tax and Public Finance, American Economic Journal, Journal of International Economics and Journal of Public Economics.

Our PhD program has a strong record of producing top experts in the field. The program’s great international reputation is reflected in very successful placements of our graduates both in academia (e.g., Carnegie Mellon University, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Goethe University Frankfurt, Illinois State, Tilburg University, Wharton School of Business) and industry (e.g., Bain & Company, BASF, Daimler, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Flick Gocke Schaumburg, KPMG, McKinsey, PricewaterhouseCoopers, SAP). Funding for PhD students comes from competitive CDSB stipends, research/teaching assistant positions at the chairs of the Area, or third-party grants (e.g., DFG).
