Since July 2012 I'm working at the Digital Enterprise Research Institute in Galway, Ireland. You can find more information on my recent research work there on my DERI web page (click here).
My main research interests are concepts to support complex self-organizing distributed systems and their applications. I'm particularily interested in developing novel programming interfaces for developers of such systems and system software supporting and realizing these interfaces. Currently I'm looking specifically at applying organic computing principles in two application domains:
The goal of the SANDMAN project is to develop algorithms and protocols for energy-efficient Pervasive Computing systems. It originates from the energy-efficient service discovery protocol with the same name that was developed by me in the Peer to Peer Pervasive Computing project at the Universität Stuttgart.
The COMITY project addresses the detection and resolution of conflicts in Pervasive Computing environments. For this purpose we investigate which elements of a Pervasive Computing environments are relevant for conflicts and consequently, how conflicts can be detected at runtime. Furthermore we analyze and develop strategies which allow the resolution of these conflicts. The project is currently financed by the German Science Foundation (DFG). Click here for more information.
The peers@play project investigates how peer-to-peer technology can be used to create distributed interactive world models that are able to fulfill the highest requirements with respect to scalability, security and consistency. These can be used, e.g., in distributed context management and virtual / augmented reality. The project is a cooperation project with the Universities of Duisburg-Essen and Hannover, coordinated by me. More information can be found at the project web page here.
The Peer-to-Peer Pervasive Computing (3PC) project investigated system software support for adaptive applications in peer to peer based spontaneous networks. The project addressed the heterogeneity of devices as well as the heterogeneity of communication technology. The overall objectives were the development of system software that is minimal in its resource requirements in order to support resource-poor devices but flexible to allow the integration of resources on more powerful devices (BASE). Adaptation of applications is eased by an application model based on contractually specified components and a supporting component system (PCOM). The project was partially funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) during the second and third phase of the DFG Priority Programme 1140 (Middleware for Self-organizing Infrastructures in Networked Mobile Systems) and by Daimler Chrysler Research.More information can be found here.
