Corporate Volunteering is defined as “employed individuals giving time during a planned activity for an external nonprofit or charitable group or organization”. In fact, more than 90 percent of the Fortune 500 companies engage in varying types of corporate volunteering activities. Companies increasingly engage in these types of activities as they are facing new expectations from potential and existing employees, especially from millennials, and intend to seek new ways to address these expectations to succeed in the “war for talent”.
In this Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), for which you can already register, interested students, practitioners, researchers and nonprofit organizations will gain interesting insights into the topic of corporate volunteering. The course, which is designed by the University of Mannheim, Business School, will be accompanied academically by Prof. Dr. Laura Marie Schons, Holder of the Chair of Corporate Social Responsibility, Dr. Irmela Koch-Bayram, Postdoc at the Chair of Human Resource Management and Leadership, Prof. Dr. Bernd Helmig, Holder of the Chair for Public and Nonprofit Management and Dr. Benedikt Englert, Postdoc at the University of Mannheim.
The MOOC approaches the issue from three different perspectives, namely of the company that offers the corporate volunteering program, of the individual employee volunteer, and of the nonprofit organization which is the partner in the volunteering activity. The course will go far beyond the purely academic perspective: Besides investigating the state of the art in academic research regarding the three aforementioned perspectives, the MOOC includes various practitioner voices, including managers designing these programs (e.g., from SAP, BASF, or Zalando), individual employees reporting their experiences of such programs, and representatives of nonprofit organizations which have collaborated with corporate volunteers.
The MOOC aims at providing participants with a deep understanding of the topic of corporate volunteering from the perspectives of the company, the employee, and the nonprofit organization, enabling them to plan and design a successful corporate volunteering program themselves.
Registration is open now, the MOOC officially starts on March, 13.
