Professor Otto H. Jacobs Celebrates 80th Birthday

There is almost no other personality who has shaped the University of Mannheim in the past decades like Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Otto H. Jacobs. He is an internationally renowned scientist, a highly esteemed tax expert and was the President of the University of Mannheim for many years.

From 1971 to 2006, Mr. Jacobs held the chair and was the director of the Department of Business Administration and Taxation at the University of Mannheim. Furthermore, he was dean of the Business School from 1973 to 1974. As President of the University of Mannheim from 1988 to 1994, Mr. Jacobs had significant influence on the development of the university. His major achievements during that time include the establishment of various centers for research and teaching at the university. During his term of office as President, the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) as well as the Center for SME Research and Entrepreneurship (IfM) were founded. On top of that, he played a major role in the foundation of institutions such as the Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW). The ZEW is one of the leading centers for economic research in Germany.

Under his leadership, the Mannheim Business School was established and became an internationally renowned institution during his term as managing director from 2004 to 2007. Throughout his 35 years of research work, he decisively shaped the field of business taxation.

On Saturday, 12 October 2019, the professor emeriti celebrated his 80th birthday. The university congratulates Mr. Jacobs.
