Chair of Information Systems II – Prof. Dr. Jens Förderer

Prof. Dr. Jens Förderer
Our Focus: Digital Technologies, Markets, and Strategy
Digital technologies are continuously transforming the conditions under which businesses operate—currently, most notably through artificial intelligence.
Companies face fundamental uncertainties: What role do new technologies play in their strategy? Which business models are sustainable in the long term, and which are at risk? How will competition in markets change due to digitalization? And how can data and algorithms be integrated into value creation?
The chair addresses these questions from an economic perspective. The focus is on analyzing how technologies transform value creation, business models, and competition – and what strategic options emerge for companies, entrepreneurs, and investors as a result. To this end, we examine how new technologies affect economic outcomes, particularly their impact on demand, prices, competitive positions, innovation, and consumer behavior. From this, we derive concrete predictions about markets and strategies and systematically test them using data and empirical analysis.
Excellence in Research
The chair’s research is driven by scientific excellence. Our work has been published in leading academic journals such as Management Science, Information Systems Research, and MIS Quarterly, and is supported by highly competitive funding programs, including an ERC Starting Grant. In the WirtschaftsWoche research ranking, the chair ranks among the most productive economists under 40 in the German-speaking world and holds the top position based on A+ publications.
Close to Practice
We work closely with companies, consultancies, entrepreneurs, and investors. We translate our findings into business contexts and derive concrete, evidence-based recommendations that enable well-founded strategic decisions. This work is grounded in rigorous, independent scientific analysis.
Interactive and Applied Teaching
Our teaching portfolio includes a range of courses in the chair’s core subject areas across bachelor’s, master’s, MBA, Executive MBA, and doctoral programs. Our teaching integrates cutting-edge research findings and is interactive and application-oriented (e.g., through case studies, guest lectures from practitioners, and hands-on exercises).
