In the spring semester (FSS2023), the Chair of Financial Markets and Financial Institutions will offer nine master's thesis topics in the area of “Empirical Finance” for master students at the University of Mannheim.

  • Prerequisites

All topics require to work empirically. Therefore, a solid knowledge of statistics and econometrics is useful and participants should be motivated to undertake empirical work. Specific requirements for each topic are given in the topic list.

The course provides you with basic knowledge about statistical analyses with STATA and the use of financial databases. Tutorials are offered jointly with the Chair of Finance (Prof. Theissen), the Chair of Corporate Finance (Prof. Maug), and the Chair of International Finance (Prof. Ruenzi).  Please also consult the homepage of the Chair of Finance (Prof. Theissen) for up-to-date information regarding the tutorial.

  • Colloquia

The Chair of Financial Markets and Financial Institutions will hold two block sessions in which candidates will present their topics. These block sessions are an integral component of the supervision at our chair. They should be considered as a chance to get an early feedback on the thesis. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to discuss problems and receive guidance. The participation in the block sessions is mandatory for all candidates.
