Three Essays on Workforce Scheduling

Research interests
As part of the workforce planning process, workforce scheduling constitutes a crucial element in service operations management. Service providers need to efficiently allocate their employees to time slots to cover the time-dependent requirements driven by demand, while minimizing staffing costs. Our research deals with mixed integer programming and heuristic solution approaches for different stages of this planning process, such as shift and days-off scheduling and task assignment of a heterogeneous and multiskilled workforce. Some of our current projects deal with check-in counters' workforce scheduling at airports and technician scheduling for maintenance providers.
