Augmenting Medical Diagnosis Decisions with AI

A. Heinzl, E. Jussupow, K. Spohrer; Bocconi University (Milan)

How do physicians make diagnosis decisions whilst supported with artificial intelligent computer systems? On 24 October 2019, Prof. Dr. Armin Heinzl provided first answers to this question at the Bocconi University in Milan accompanied by Ekaterina Jussupow and Dr. Kai Spohrer. By friendly invitation of Aleksandra Torbica from CERGAS (Centre for Research on Health and Social Care Management; www.cergas.unibocconi.eu), he presented the results of an experimental study in which young medical doctors were supported by an artificial intelligence tool. The peculiarity was that half of the recommendations of the “Sherlock” system were manipulated to be wrong. The discussion after the presentation was stimulating and the journey to Northern Italy was highly benefitial. The study was initiated in the BMBF research campus M2OLIE (www.m2olie.de) and has been pursued in the projects ForDigital (www.fordigital.org) as well as digilog (www.digilog-bw.de).
