New publication of our chair in the Journal of Cleaner Production!

We are happy to share with you our latest research on frugal product design, published in the Journal of Cleaner Production. In a multi-method study, Dr. Sergej von Janda, Dr. Sabine Kuester, Prof. Dr. Monika Schuhmacher and G. Shainesh explore frugal products as a means to address the needs of consumers who, by necessity or choice, value products with a low cost of consumption that, at the same time, are sustainable, simple, and offer basic quality.

The study generates a common understanding of product frugality that acknowledges the multi-dimensional nature of this construct. Nomological examination of the developed index reveals that product frugality increases consumers’ willingness to generate word of mouth. This research offers guidance for managers seeking to explore the potential of frugal products in addressing consumers’ need for higher value products while minimizing environmental impact.
