The Dangers of Distorted Financial Statements

German companies have a long-standing tendency to underreport their actual earnings. In December 2021, more than 15% of firms indicated that they deliberately managed earnings downward, compared to only 5% that adjusted them upward.

However, the challenging business environment in 2022, marked by unprecedented cost pressure, led to declining earnings and a notable shift: for the first time, more companies reported managing their earnings upwards rather than downwards.

In a guest essay for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Prof. Dr. Jannis Bischof, Chair of Business Administration and Accounting, addresses this development and its implications.

Drawing on data from the German Business Panel, he discusses how changing economic conditions have influenced corporate reporting behavior and highlights the risks this trend may pose for German managers.
