Behind the Research: Women Making a Difference

The initiative showcases the university’s many outstanding female researchers across disciplines. From 9 March, short interviews with these researchers are regularly shared on LinkedIn under the hashtags #WomenInResearch #UniMA.
Meet Yasmin Kuhlmann
The first story in the series features Yasmin Kuhlmann, a doctoral candidate in business administration at the Business School. Her research looks at how accounting information is presented and used when decision-makers face uncertainty, behavioral biases, or limits to processing information. She explores when transparency helps guide decisions and when it can unintentionally distort them, both inside and outside the firm.
From Curiosity to Independent Research
Kuhlmann's curiosity for research started with inspiring teaching, which showed her how powerful a good question can be. Over time, she learned to connect analytical models with real-world data, a challenge she continues to work on with like-minded co-authors. She credits the University of Mannheim not only for rigorous training but also for an environment of ambitious peers, high research standards, and supportive mentors that helped her grow into an independent researcher.
Advice for Young Women in Academia
Her advice to young women considering a career in academia is simple: follow questions you truly care about, don’t wait to feel “fully ready” before sharing your ideas, and seek out mentors and peers who support you.
