Hamburger Instead of Dropdown: Website and Intranet Get a New Navigation

A single click on the so-called hamburger menu brings everything back – this time in full-screen mode: all main items at a glance, with nothing else on the page competing for your attention. The changeover applies to the entire website and intranet.
Why the changeover?
Around 50 percent of users access the University of Mannheim's website via smartphones or tablets. At the same time, the number of internal and external pages has grown considerably in recent years – the old navigation simply could not keep up. The hamburger menu handles both: minimalist in the header, clear in full-screen mode, opening up one level at a time.
The new navigation was developed by an interdisciplinary team: the web developers at UNIT, the brand manager, and the online editorial team at the Marketing Department. In recent weeks, staff members and students tested the navigation in several rounds. Their feedback has been incorporated into the final version.
