Abstract
Perspectives on communication for sustainability as new “norm” and principle of action in socio-ecological transformation processes
Sustainability has been well used (and abused) as “buzz-word” and label for certain behavior and action in political, organizational and increasingly in individual communication. There is no commonly agreed definition, and as a term it is often confused with sustainable development, change or transformation; it stays predominantly a policy vision and is, thus, rather conceptual. However, current research in discourse and media, business and environmental communication studies question if sustainability has been further established as principle of action, as new norm and potential universal value guiding societal and cultural transformation processes. Based on a critical approach, the presentation explores potential processes of normalization of sustainability as a new norm and offers a theoretical concept for cultivation of sustainability as a dialectic process of questioning and stabilization in transformation and change processes.
