Shaping Diversity Together: University Trains 15 Diversity Ambassadors

Over the past year, 15 university members completed a training program as diversity ambassadors for diversity and anti-discrimination. On 15 June, President Prof. Dr. Thomas Fetzer and Executive Vice President Dr. Katrin Schoppa-Bauer presented the certificates of participation.

The ten-day training took place between September 2025 and March 2026 in cooperation with the association Eine Welt der Vielfalt e. V. Participants explored various dimensions of diversity — including gender and sexual orientation, social background, and migration history and nationality. Beyond the basics, the program centered on concrete, real-world strategies.

The 15 trained colleagues now serve as points of contact for their respective school or department and are expected to help build a diversity-aware campus culture. They take on the role of navigators for questions relating to diversity. As catalysts, they identify and consolidate needs, channel them to university leadership, and thereby drive change. They also promote institution-wide dialogue on diversity and anti-discrimination topics.

Various Initiatives and Activities Planned

In the coming months, the diversity ambassadors are planning a range of formats — including workshops, lectures, and discussion sessions within departments, as well as participation in the Staff Days next year. As a first initiative, the ambassadors worked together with the Representative for Employees with a Disability to expand accessible restrooms to include all-gender facilities.

The training of diversity ambassadors is part of the measures that university members developed as part of the Diversity Audit “Vielfalt gestalten.” The goal of these measures is to make diversity visible as a strength, promote equal opportunity, and create a campus culture in which different people and perspectives are valued, heard, and included.
