Abstract
As firms increasingly host online communities, they need to mediate across the divergent interests of community members and the firm. One way of addressing this is to establish a boundary organization. Yet, how to design such an organization is a theoretical and practical puzzle. We know that both boundaries and boundary organizations evolve over time. Hence, we can assume that they also co-evolve with each other. We understand little, however, of how such co-evolution occurs. This research seeks to understand how boundaries and boundary organizations co-evolve in firm-hosted online communities. To this end, we investigate the evolution of a boundary organization set up by a firm hosting an online community engaged in a multiplayer game called “EVE Online.” We conducted an eight-year longitudinal qualitative case study of the boundary organization, tracing the evolution in its practices and attendant boundaries. We show how boundaries and the boundary organization co-evolve with each other through the mediation of two sets of practices: (1) boundary renegotiation practices that translate discontent into changes to the structure of the boundary organization; and (2) boundary spanning practices through which the firm’s design of the boundary organization is translated into situated action. Based on our findings we develop four mechanisms which explain the co-evolution of boundaries and the boundary organization. Our research contributes to the scholarly conversation on boundary work through identifying these mechanisms, explaining tensions involved in designing boundary organizations, as well as extending research on boundary work to the context of firm-hosted online communities.

Speaker Bio
Aron Lindberg is an Associate Professor of Information Systems at Stevens Institute of Technology’s School of Business. His research explores how crowds (e.g., open source communities and virtual worlds) and algorithms (e.g., semiconductor chip design) shape digital innovation. He combines qualitative and computational methods, often leveraging digital trace data for theory development. His work has been published in leading journals, including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, and the Journal of the Association for Information Systems. He has held visiting and research fellow positions at NYU and the Swedish Center for Digital Innovation. He is a visiting professor at Umeå University in Sweden. He also serves as an Associate Editor at MIS Quarterly and for Special Issues at Information Systems Research and Information & Organization.
