Abstract
Firms increasingly face media criticisms on multiple, often related environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues simultaneously. We extend existing research by examining the associations between these concurrent media criticisms and a firm’s action on a focal issue. Drawing on attention-based and resourced-based views, we posit that action on a focal issue is positively associated with two key factors: a) related direct media criticisms, defined as criticisms received on other issues within the same category (i.e., E, S or G), particularly when the firm possesses more resources, and b) related indirect media criticism, occurring when a firm’s peers face criticism on issues related to the focal issue, with this association amplified when the issue is more financially material. Utilizing a comprehensive dataset spanning 3,031 public firms across 20 ESG issues over a decade, we find support for our hypotheses. This study contributes to the literature on firm responses to media criticisms by advancing our understanding of ESG strategy and corporate social responsibility in the face of a complex landscape of ESG issues and media criticisms.
