Female Bosses Work Particularly in One Sector of the Financial World

Gender diversity remains a persistent challenge in the financial sector. While progress has been made in recent years, women continue to be underrepresented, particularly in leadership roles. This imbalance becomes more pronounced at higher management levels, raising questions about structural barriers and workplace conditions within the industry.

An article in private banking magazin addresses these issues by citing the study “Gender Diversity in the Asset Management Industry”, authored by KPMG, Fondsfrauen, and the University of Mannheim. One of the study’s three authors is Prof. Dr. Alexandra Niessen‑Ruenzi, Chair of General Business Administration and Corporate Governance.

The article highlights that the proportion of women in the German‑speaking financial sector is significantly lower than that of men, especially in senior positions. An exception is found in public pension funds, where the share of women is comparatively higher than in other areas of finance, despite management roles still being predominantly held by men. Possible explanations include better work‑life balance and a less aggressive working environment in this sector.
