Sustainability has been a fundamental part of research at Mannheim Business School for many years. Since the pioneering work of Prof. von Kortzfleisch in the 1970s, it has been approached as an interdisciplinary field of study encompassing all areas of the faculty.

A Pioneer in Sustainability Research

Prof. Dr. Gert Harald August von Kortzfleisch was one of the first researchers to systematically place environmental issues in an economic context. He was affiliated with the University of Mannheim from 1962 and shaped research there for many years.

Ahead of his time in socio-ecological research

Von Kortzfleisch was far ahead of his time: his work focused on the interaction between economics and ecology. He explored, among other topics, the limits of natural resources, the impact of technological developments on the environment and society, and developed pioneering concepts such as the “Economic Consequences of Long-Lived Automobiles”.

Lasting impact through research and leadership

As a member of the Club of Rome, he contributed to the “The Limits to Growth” project. In addition, he shaped the development of the University of Mannheim through his roles as Dean, Rector, and Vice-Rector. His legacy continues today, notably through the Gert-v.-Kortzfleisch-Preis and the lasting relevance of his research.
