Sustainability Increasingly Important for German Companies

More than half of all German companies delegate the matter of sustainability to their board or management, and the topic is also becoming more important in terms of content. These are the key findings of a survey that was conducted by the Chair for Sustainable Business at the University of Mannheim, the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the Peer School for Sustainable Development.

In the survey, 75 % of sustainability managers asserted that the issue has become “much more important” in their companies. 55 % of the companies stated that their board is responsible for sustainability. But despite its increase in relevance, the topic seems not yet to be fully established. Only one respondent said that it is “fully integrated in all areas”. At least the Covid-19 pandemic did not seem to have a negative impact on companies’ sustainability budgets, as half of the experts affirmed. However, only about half of them think that the financial means for their own sector are sufficient.

51 sustainability managers from large companies took part in this first survey. In the future, this survey will be conducted once a year.
