Abstract
People rarely revisit or revise personal information they have disclosed online—even when the initial disclosure (i.e., past self) no longer fits who they are (i.e., evolved present self). This paper develops a process theory of disclosure adjustment to explain why people adjust past disclosures (e.g., edit old posts) and why they do not. Building on self-continuity research, the theory articulates three subprocesses of disclosure adjustment: reconstruction, appraisal, and realignment of the past self with the present self. We propose that self-discontinuity – a sense of disconnection from the past self – would demotivate engagement with these subprocesses and thus lead to non-adjustment even when there is a misfit in the initial disclosure. This paper further provides a theoretical foundation for understanding how technology features shape the process – by influencing the motivation (e.g., resurfacing an initial disclosure) or behavioral control (e.g., affording disclosure deletion). Our work extends Information Systems privacy research beyond initial disclosures to continuous disclosure management and offers practical insights for both technology providers and policymakers.
Speaker Bio
Zhuoran Jiang is an Assistant Professor of Information Systems and Operations Management at HEC Paris. She received her Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of Texas at Austin in 2024. Her current research focuses on digital privacy within emerging technological and regulatory contexts. In particular, she examines the psychological and behavioral aspects of individuals’ sharing of personal information online, using theory building, laboratory experiments, and econometric methods. At HEC Paris, Zhuoran teaches Data Modeling and Data Science courses in the Grande École program.
