A Confident Tone For Higher Chances of Success

Activist hedge fund campaigns play a significant role in influencing corporate strategy and performance. Understanding what drives their success is therefore of great interest to both investors and companies. One factor that has gained attention is how activists communicate their intentions and how this affects market perceptions.

Prof. Dr. Matthias Brauer, Chair of Strategic and International Management, together with former Research Associate Dr. Philipp Binder and Prof. Margarethe Wiersema from the University of California Irvine, investigated this topic.

Using data from Thomson Reuters ASSET4 ESG, they analyzed 1,683 hedge fund campaigns targeting US companies and found that a more confident tone of voice is often interpreted by investors as a signal of the activists’ competence.
