Global Sustainability Management

An interactive international experience with focus on sustainability

As part of the European university alliance ENGAGE.EU, the Business School offers MMM students an option to study abroad with a focus on sustainability management. GSM students from all nine ENGAGE.EU partner schools spend a semester together at WU Vienna or the Hanken School of Economics. A specially developed GSM track with a focus on sustainability awaits the students there. In workshops, boot camps and project work, the students from all over Europe deal with the latest developments in the field of sustainability management. They then spend a second semester either at their home institution or at a second ENGAGE.EU partner school and complete further GSM elective courses with a focus on sustainability.

More Details

  • Program structure and timeline

The GSM program comprises two semesters with 60 ECTS in total. MMM students selected for the GSM program will spend either the spring semester 2026 at the Hanken School of Economics or the fall semester 2026/27 at WU Vienna along with the entire GSM cohort. They will follow four GSM courses specifically developed for the GSM cohort. The stay is funded by an Erasmus scholarship. In the following semester (either the fall semester 2026/27 or the spring semester 2027), students have two options. They either return to the University of Mannheim and complete further elective courses with a focus on sustainability or they complete a second semester at another ENGAGE.EU partner school. If students choose the second option, the GSM elective courses must be completed either online or in an additional semester in Mannheim.

  • How to apply

MMM students can apply in their first semester. The deadline is on 30 September 2025. Further details can be found in the application instructions.

  • Student profile

GSM applicants need to be in their first semester of the MMM program. They should have a good to very good academic track record, a keen interest in sustainability and a high level of motivation. They should also show that they take responsibility and would like to continue to do so in the future: through social, cultural or community involvement.

  • Benefits of the GSM program

During the GSM option abroad, you will combine current topics in sustainability research with an international experience. You will benefit from the expertise of top ENGAGE.EU researchers and sustainability practitioners and expand your professional network. You will hone your intercultural skills by studying together with students from different countries and backgrounds. And finally, the GSM program takes you to attractive European cities. Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive a certificate of participation.
