ACC/MAN 663: Carbon Removal: Technologies, Markets & Business Impact

Contents
As the world transitions toward net-zero emissions, carbon removal has become a central element of climate strategy and business transformation. This course introduces the technological foundations, market mechanisms, and strategic implications of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) for firms and investors. Students will learn how different removal approaches—from nature-based to engineered solutions—operate, how emerging markets for carbon credits and removals function, and how companies can integrate CDR into their sustainability and investment strategies. Topics include the role of regulation and policy, certification and accounting standards, business model innovation, and financing mechanisms for scaling removal technologies. Real-world cases and guest lectures from industry experts will illustrate how CDR is reshaping value chains, influencing corporate climate commitments, and creating new opportunities and risks for business leaders.

Learning outcomes
Students gain a solid understanding of the technological, economic, and strategic foundations of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and its role in achieving global net-zero goals. They develop an intuition for how CDR solutions interact with corporate climate strategies, regulatory frameworks, and emerging carbon markets. They also understand how different business models, financing mechanisms, and policy incentives shape the development and scaling of carbon removal technologies. Students are able to critically evaluate CDR initiatives from both a business and sustainability perspective and apply their knowledge to real-world cases involving companies, investors, and policymakers.
