New publication: “Artificial intelligence and machine learning in purchasing and supply management”

The paper by Jan Spreitzenbarth, Christoph Bode, and Heiner Stuckenschmidt highlights the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in procurement.

A new paper “Artificial intelligence and machine learning in purchasing and supply management: A mixed-methods review of the state-of-the-art in literature and practice” by Jan Spreitzenbarth, Christoph Bode, and Heiner Stuckenschmidt (all University of Mannheim) (accepted by the Journal of Purchasing & Supply Management) presentes a systematic review, analyzing 46 relevant studies and conducting 20 expert interviews, to understand the current state and future application domains for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in procurement. Key findings are:

  • Mismatch between research and practice: The existing literature does not reflect the priorities identified by industry experts.
  • Underexplored areas: Cost analysis and supplier sustainability require more research attention.
  • Gap in operational applications: Despite data availability, applying AI/ML in operational aspects seems less explored.

This research helps guide researchers and executives in understanding the capabilities needed to successfully implement AI/ML in procurement and achieve “procurement 4.0.”
